What is the story behind Hugo.coffee?
Hugo Coffee Roasters is a brand that was born out of a love for dogs and coffee. The founder, Claudia McMullin, was a litigator on Wall Street in New York City for 17 years before moving to Utah in 1999, seeking a more outdoorsy lifestyle. She was on the Summit County Council for two terms and also served as the executive director for a local, non-profit animal rescue organization known as Nuzzles & Co.
The idea for Hugo Coffee Roasters sparked when Claudia learned that Silver Bean, a local coffee vendor, decided not to renew their lease and wanted to sell their equipment. Claudia, who loved their coffee, purchased the coffee shop and renamed it after her handsome rescue pup, Hugo. Thus, Hugo Coffee Roasters was founded in 2015, in honor of her beloved rescue dog Hugo, a handsome, mixed-breed American Bulldog/hound.
With the help of Head Roaster John Lynn, who had been the talented coffee roaster at Silver Bean, they created a wide variety of full-bodied and vibrant coffee roasts while sharing a love for animals. Their coffee is produced using ethically and sustainably harvested beans sold at grocery and retail partners and through their flagship café, Hugo Coffee Shop.
Through the Hugo Coffee Roasters Dog Rescue Mission, they support small animal rescues throughout the nation with every online purchase. They also collaborate with their retail partners for fundraisers and education and adoption events. To date, their underwriting has resulted in the adoption of over 200 cats and dogs! The mission of Hugo Coffee is to save dogs by roasting and selling fantastic fair trade organic coffee. They strive to be the go-to coffee for animal lovers nationwide. The more coffee they sell, the more dogs they’re able to help save!
